Seasonal Dressing

Choosing shoes for warm-weather outfits

Match the openness and visual weight of the shoe to your trousers, your route and the setting.

Summer footwear is not one category. Canvas trainers, loafers, boat shoes and sandals all suggest different levels of dress, and each interacts differently with a trouser hem. Start with the places you need to go rather than buying the lightest-looking shoe on a shelf.

For a day mostly spent walking

Choose a pair you already know is comfortable over the expected distance. A thin sole and an open upper may look seasonal without offering the support or secure fit you prefer. Try footwear with the socks, if any, you intend to use. Bare-foot sizing and thick-sock sizing are not interchangeable.

A simple canvas trainer works with shorts, chinos or casual linen trousers, but colour and construction matter. A dark canvas upper with a low-contrast sole looks quieter than a bright white platform. If the trouser leg is wide, a very small shoe can almost disappear beneath it; that can be pleasing, but check the result while walking as well as standing.

For lunch or a less formal evening

Loafers can move an outfit towards dressed without requiring a suit. Suede has a softer surface than polished leather, while the shape of the toe and thickness of the sole also influence the effect. A brown suede pair with navy trousers and a pale shirt is one option for dry weather. It is not a promise that every loafer belongs in every restaurant.

If you like the appearance of bare ankles but want socks, use a liner designed for that shoe opening. Check that it stays in place during a short walk. A sock that continually slips under the heel is not improved by being invisible.

When sandals make sense

Sandals work most easily with clearly casual clothes. Consider a plain leather pair with relaxed shorts and a camp-collar shirt, or a sturdier walking style with an outfit built around activity. The distinction is about context rather than ranking one as more stylish.

Inspect straps and closures for rubbing before committing to a full day. Avoid debuting unfamiliar sandals on the first long walk of a holiday. Keep another suitable pair available while you find out how they wear.

Whatever you choose, allow footwear to dry and air between uses and follow its material-specific care guidance. Summer does not remove the need for maintenance. A small rotation of shoes that genuinely fit your days is more useful than several pairs that only work for a photograph.
