What to wear to a graduation as a guest
Check the institution's guidance and plan for ceremonies, photographs and walking between venues.

Graduation clothing guidance often addresses the students taking part, not their guests. Read the institution's information carefully so you do not confuse academic dress requirements with what visitors are expected to wear. If the guest guidance is unclear, ask the event team rather than copying the graduate's clothing instructions.
Choose an appropriate level of formality
A suit may be suitable at some ceremonies, while a jacket with trousers or a shirt and neat chinos may be acceptable at others. The institution and family's plans should guide you. You are attending to support someone else's milestone, so there is no need to turn the outfit into a competing statement.
For a flexible combination, consider a navy blazer, light shirt and grey trousers with comfortable plain shoes. If the event is less formal, a fine knit or shirt without the jacket may work. Avoid assuming that trainers or jeans are acceptable simply because the ceremony takes place on a campus.
Plan the whole day
You may spend time waiting outside, moving between buildings and standing for photographs. Look at the forecast and bring outerwear that works over the outfit. A light shirt alone may be uncomfortable during a cool outdoor queue, while heavy layers can become awkward in a crowded hall.
Use shoes you can walk in comfortably. Campuses can involve longer distances and more stairs than expected. If you have mobility or access needs, check the venue arrangements separately; no styling suggestion should take priority over footwear or clothing that you need.
Think about the meal afterwards. A restaurant reservation may have its own dress expectations, and you may not have time to change. Choose a combination that covers both parts of the day where possible. If the two settings genuinely differ, plan the change rather than carrying unnecessary options without a place to use them.
Keep the bag manageable and leave room for a removed layer if needed. Check the outfit seated, because ceremonies can involve an extended period in one place. A tight waistband or collar will be more noticeable then than during a quick standing try-on.
Prepare clothes ahead of time and allow for the journey. The useful finishing details are simple: shoes in appropriate condition, a shirt ready to wear and all necessary layers accounted for. Once those are handled, the outfit can become a quiet part of the day while your attention stays on the person graduating.
